The Collaborative Village: Redefining Success in College Athletics
September 2025
The Collaborative Village framework emphasizes building strong character in players and cultivating lasting culture with coaches, creating a solid foundation for athlete development.
In today’s rapidly changing world of college athletics, one concept stands out as a foundation for long-term success: the Collaborative Village. Spearheaded by Travis Taylor, this model shifts the focus away from isolated achievements and toward building interconnected systems of support for both players and coaches. As the NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) era continues to evolve, the Collaborative Village framework provides clarity, balance, and purpose.
The Collaborative Village Framework
At its core, the Collaborative Village rests on two essential pillars: Player Pillar: Character and Coach Pillar: Culture. Together, these pillars represent the two-way relationships that sustain athletes and programs alike.

The Player Pillar emphasizes building strong character to guide athletes both on and off the field.
The Player Pillar: Character
For student-athletes, success begins with character: a foundation built through relationships, preparation, and purpose. As Taylor emphasizes, “From a player standpoint, first thing we’re looking at is your support system. Who’s supporting you, who’s showing up for you every day, who’s your champion?” With that in mind, the Player Pillar includes four key elements:
-
Parents: The bedrock of the support system, parents serve as champions who provide guidance and stability through tough decisions.
-
Academics: A strategic academic plan prepares athletes for life after sports; as Taylor points out, it’s important to make choices early on that will support long-term success when their playing days are over.
-
Preparation: From time management to coachability, preparation separates those who thrive at the next level from those who fall short. It demands sacrifice and a willingness to embrace growth.
-
The Right Fit: Athletes must view college selection as a job interview. Beyond flashy facilities and big-name programs, the right roster opportunities, degree paths, and networking resources define true fit.

The Coach Pillar focuses on cultivating a strong, positive culture that shapes teams and fosters success.
The Coach Pillar: Culture
On the other side of the Collaborative Village is culture: the responsibility of coaches to foster environments where athletes can succeed on and off the field. Taylor explains, “As a coach, I’m looking at how I build my relationships now, right? And more than ever… I’m actually working on my PhD where I’m studying NIL triggers and how it affects families.” These relationships shape the Coach Pillar, built on four cornerstones:
-
Coach: Leadership now depends on communication, empathy, and trust as much as on strategy and playbooks.
-
Athlete: Coaches must see beyond performance and recognize the pressures athletes face in balancing academics, NIL responsibilities, and personal growth.
-
Locker Room: The heart of any program is its locker room. As Taylor puts it, “Your locker room is your culture. Protect your locker room at all costs.” Vetting influences carefully ensures the space remains a positive force.
-
Parent: By strengthening relationships with parents, coaches align families and programs, helping athletes unlock their full potential.
Why the Collaborative Village Matters
The Collaborative Village recognizes that no athlete, and no coach, succeeds alone. By weaving together character and culture, this model creates an ecosystem that balances immediate opportunities with long-term success. It helps athletes prepare for life after sports while giving coaches the tools to build resilient, cohesive teams.
In an era where NIL has transformed the landscape, this framework is essential. The Collaborative Village provides the blueprint for navigating college athletics with integrity, vision, and sustainability.
