Shiver points out a harsh truth: nearly a third of NIL money is reportedly going toward luxury items and travel. That might feel like a reward in the moment, but with the average NFL career lasting just three years, it can become a costly distraction.

His advice? Think long-term. Treat NIL earnings as seed money for future investments in businesses, personal development, or smart savings, not just lifestyle upgrades.

Financial Coaches Belong in the Program

One of the most powerful takeaways? Financial education needs to be built into athletic development. Just as teams have strength coaches and nutritionists, they should be bringing in trusted financial mentors to help athletes build sustainable success.

“You don’t learn how to play sports in a classroom. You learn by doing,” Nick says. “It’s the same with money.”
